Avocado Milkshake? Yes!

by erinireland on February 7, 2010

Fat tastes delicious.  This is why a smooth, buttery avocado – despite its mild flavor – is so irresistible, especially when sprinkled with salt, Frank’s Red Hot, or sugar.

Yes, sugar.  Although the avocado is widely considered a vegetable, it is a fruit.  Knowing this may help you open up to the idea of a sweet avocado flavor.  FYI, the experiment described below has been saved in my recipe box (delish!).

First, you will need big, juicy, ripe avocados.  I waited painstakingly for four days until mine were perfect.

Throw them and the following into the blender:

That would be: macadamia nuts, brown sugar, and almond milk – which all add to the incredible creamy, nutty sweetness of this creation.

Ingredients need no measuring.  Grab a spoon and sample until it’s the perfect sweetness.  This ‘milkshake’ or ‘mousse’ (depending on how much milk you use) is a perfect way to get your healthy fats.  And look at how pretty it is!  I stirred in a handful of extra macadamia nuts to add crunch.

Try plain avocado sprinkled with sugar for an even easier sweet snack (thank you Scutt).  And check my fellow foodie Jen’s site for 13 more inventive ideas with avocados.

Ciao for now.

Avocados are great in smoothies and mousses (especially chocolate mousse!) For my tastes this smoothie would probably be a bit bland, I’d definitely add berries and fruit.
